2008 ① - Nagano 2008 Part One

Nagano is lovely!

For this long weekend, Teruko and I decided to go for this package from Japan Railway called 'Steam Locomotive Trip - Shinetsu Line 120th Anniversary', which we found by accident.

In order to enjoy Nagano to the fullest, we left Tokyo by getting up at 6:00AM. What a lovely weather we had! We could even see the Mt. Fuji clearly from the bullet train. We arrived at Nagano in less than 2hrs... Japan's bullet train is amazing!

As soon as we arrived in Nagano, we headed to Zenkoji Temple, which I have been longing to go to. It's so convenient that we could go to the temple from the railway station with a coin of 100 Yen. There were not many people around the temple as it was still around 10:00AM. Zenkoji Temple has some character, and was better than I expected. All the traditional buildings of shops alongside the long path to the temple add some nice colour to the area. Unlike the information we gathered on the net, we could still see autumn foliage! How lucky are we?! I couldn't stop taking photos. :-)

Shinshu Noodle we had for lunch was yummy! It had good portion with Tempura and edible wild plants.

The moment has arrived... trip on a steam locomotive D51 498 that all railway fans dream of! It's still unbelievable that we could get on the train. The platform at Nagano station was in chaos because Japan Railway sold "viewing only" tickets to those without passenger tickets in order to let them see the steam locomotive. There were even some fights broke out...

The 1hr long journey on a snow locomotive was just amazing! The black thick steam coming out of the locomotive, the distinctive horn that the locomotive was blowing, everything was great! Along the journey, we could even see the North Alps with snow at the top. One thing that amazed us was the amount of people who were waving us while carrying a camera alongside the rail! It even made us feel like we are "special people". I was envious of those who could take photos of the steam locomotive with the North Alps in the background.

Although we were in the middle of nowhere on mountains as Hotel Tangram, where we stayed, is a ski resort, the view of the snow maintains was excellent, hot spring was lovely, the dinner was great, and the staff was all friendly.

We finished the day with local apple wine!

Hey Dodgy, any technology that allow multiple URL links so we see them in English too?
